Firefighters lifted their hats in the air and the congregation waved white handkerchiefs as they sang a spiritual Monday at the final Charleston-area funeral for one of the nine firefighters killed in a furniture store blaze a week ago.
The funeral for Firefighter Melvin Champaign, 46, was the eighth held since Friday. The nine died June 18 during a fire that gutted the Sofa Super Store. The cause of the fire still is under investigation.

The Monday service for firefighter Melvin Champaign, 46, was the eighth since a memorial drew thousands of people to a coliseum Friday. A funeral for engineer Mark Kelsey will be held today in Washington, Ind.

GIBSON CITY - An 18-year-old from Melvin died Friday afternoon after a head-on crash in Champaign County, and Gibson City-Melvin- Sibley High School will be open today for people mourning the junior.
Ethan Glascock was killed in a crash at 1:43 p.m. on Illinois 47 at County Road 2800 North about five miles north of Mahomet, state police at Pesotum said.

No. 16-state ranked Dwight High School shocked No. 4 Coal City to win the Coal City Class A Wrestling Regional, 215.5 to 169, Saturday. The championship was the first regional wrestling title in Trojan history.Dwight advanced men in 12 of the 14 weight classes to Friday and Saturdays Plano Sectional. Dwight also advanced to the 6:30 p.m. Feb. 21 Wilmington Dual Team Sectional to face No. 21 Lisle. Runner-up Central Catholic High School and third-place Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley earned sectional berths Wednesday in the Champaign St. Thomas More Class A Regional girls golf tournament at Urbana's Stone Creek Golf Course.
Central Catholic, led by 89s from sophomore Tabitha Bell and freshman Elizabeth Swanlund, had a 392 total to place second behind St. Thomas More (335). GCMS took the final qualifying spot for Saturday's GCMS Sectional at Gibson City with a 412.
