  • ORONO - Former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell had a lot of help coming up in the world. The Waterville-raised son of immigrant parents credits a number of individuals and institutions with giving him a helping hand to become the effective political leader he is today. If even a few of those people had failed to help me, who knows what I would be doing?" he remarked during an interview Sunday. Now, serving as the U.S. special envoy to the Middle East, Mitchell is committed to providing the same kind of help to other deserving Maine youngsters through the work of his George J. Mitchell Scholarship Research Institute, which he founded in 1994. Each year the organization awards a college scholarship to one graduating senior from each public high school in Maine. The awards are base...

  • If you plan to serve food your team would love during Super Bowl XLV - featuring the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers - it's sure to be a sausage party. Foodies, get ready for bratwurst versus kielbasa. Brian Brock, a graphic design artist who lives in Bartlett but hails from Pittsburgh, says thick and greasy is in order for the big day. "Polish kielbasa and kraut is a must!" he says, adding that pierogies (dumplings of unleavened dough traditionally stuffed with potato filling, sauerkraut, ground meat or fruit), golabki (cabbage rolls), halusky (noodles and cabbage) and pastrami sandwiches with fries and slaw on top are also Pittsburgh favorites.

  • I keep thinking about a parent who's called in to the principal's office because the child is misbehaving, and so many teachers have said, 'And the parent comes in yelling at us that their child would never do that and why are they called', and all of a sudden it's no longer about, 'We're here to talk about making corrective behavioral changes in your child,' but about the parent who is using all kinds of language and threatening people. That is an unacceptable situation, which must be changed," [Bill Cosby] said. "I have another friend who said to me, 'I write rap lyrics. And I went to work, and the executive said to me, 'I want lyrics about rape. Rape is good.' 'And I looked at the guy, and I said, you're talking about my mother.' And the guy said, 'Well, if you don't want to write i...
