Penrose-St. Francis Health Services has electronic medical records - when you go to the hospital, all the tests and data and doctor's notes about you end up in an electronic file. Same at Memorial Health System and Colorado Springs Health Partners and several other physicians' practices around town. Here's the thing: None of those electronic records systems talk to each other. It's like the bad old days between Windows and Macs, when transferring a simple word processing document between operating systems was a serious hassle. It's worse, actually, because there are many electronic medical records companies.
The D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department has fired its medical director after confidential patient records were leaked to members of the D.C. Council, fire administrators said. Dr. Fernando Daniels III, the former medical director, was not accused of leaking the patient records, but was held responsible because he oversees EMS quality assurance, the administrators said.
Diversified Information Technologies, Inc. (Diversified), which provides document and information lifecycle solutions, on May 18 announced its eChart-Rx solution, a suite of medical records management and conversion services that addresses the growing demand for electronic medical records (EMR) in the health-care market.
In June, the health industry reveled in celebration of National Health Information Technology Week. While much of the hoopla centered on the advances of electronic medical records and other digital health management tools, that's not all health plans have to celebrate. Adam Casto, EVP of business development for medical records retrieval, scanning, coding and storage services provider Medi-Connect Global Inc, doesn't think it's much unlike other industries. John Bahl, head of Aetna's online product design, agrees that while technology has always been a big part of what health plans are trying to achieve, it's been very internally focused.
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Vice President Joe Biden announced today nearly $1.2 billion in grants to help hospitals transition to electronic medical records. Biden and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius were set to detail in Chicago how that piece of the $787 billion economic stimulus plan would help Americans when they go to the hospital or their doctors.
