While Georgia hospitals anxiously wait on federal approval for hundreds of millions of dollars in Medicaid funds, the company that runs Medical College of Georgia Hospital and Clinics is moving forward on its own deal to get up to $120 million that will speed up capital projects.
After widespread complaints last year about the way it distributed Medicaid money meant to help hospitals that see higher numbers of Medicaid and indigent patients, the Georgia Department of Community Health used an advisory committee of hospitals to come up with a more acceptable method. But the state is still awaiting approval on those plans from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

ALBANY, Ga., May 12 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Medical College of Georgia and the Phoebe Putney Health System are combining resources to expand clinical education and health care opportunities for Southwest Georgians. Leaders from the state's public health sciences university and the Albany-based hospital today announced the creation of the Medical College of Georgia Clinical Campus at Albany. The two organizations are in the final stages of formalizing the agreement.
The Albany Clinical Campus, which will be located at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, is designed to enhance medical students' experiences with community-based medicine. The partnership will also help reduce the shortage of certain medical specialties.

Georgia officials don't seem to grasp the extent of assets and resources available to the state's Medical College of Georgia right here in Augusta.
And they don't seem to fathom the depth of concern in the region over the state's rush toward a medical school satellite in Athens - which would divide the state's precious medical training funds and personnel.
