NORFOLK - , 74, passed away after a long battle with leukemia Aug. 11, 2010. He was born April 8, 1936 to the late Charlie Clarence and Agnes Sharp Yates in Harrellsville, N.C. After graduating from Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk. In 1958, he became the first black man to graduate with honors from Virginia Tech. Yates earned master's and doctorate degrees and worked for the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory from 1960-1979 as one of the lab's first black professional.
