State Agriculture Commissioner Gus R. Douglass will leave a long legacy when he retires from the Department of Agriculture next year. Hell also leave behind some confusion. Its not his fault. West Virginia law says the agriculture commissioner shall be a practical farmer, learned in the science of agriculture, and shall have made agriculture his chief business for a period of ten years immediately preceding his election. A dog that was hit by an elderly driver and dragged several blocks in St. Albans could be up for adoption by Monday. But Chance, the female boxer mix named for her unlikely second shot at life by a St. Albans police officer, still has several weeks of treatment ahead of her at Gateway Animal Hospital in St. Albans. No one has come forward claiming to be Chances owner, and donations are being accepted to help pay for her medical care. Veterinarians said she is in critical but stable condition. The incident occurred near the BB&T branch on Sixth Avenue about 11:30 a.m. A witness who was standing at the nearby Rite Aid saw the elderly driver dragging the dog under his vehicle. COLUMBUS -- When the Ohio House returns this week from its summer recess, one of the agenda items -- changing the date for next year's presidential primary -- is expected to produce unusual agreement between majority Republicans and minority Democrats. But that may be the only act of bipartisanship this year. The House Republican map of proposed new congressional districts is expected be unveiled before a committee on Tuesday, and could be voted on by the full House by week's end.
The map is certain to encounter opposition from Democrats, and also may alienate a couple of prominent local Republicans. One much- talked-about possibility would put U.S. Reps. Mike Turner, R- Centerville, and Steve Austria, R-Beavercreek, in the same district.
