In 1974, Matthew Emmens began his first post-college job as a Merck sales rep. Of his 600 peers, only one was a woman. So, for Emmens, CEO of Shire Pharmaceuticals, to be named Healthcare Businesswomen's Association (HBA) Honorable Mentor for 2006 -- in recognition of his long-term support for the advancement of women in the industry -- this is a telling memory. Emmens feels his biggest success is having put together an experienced team that has refocused the company in a changed environment to the point where they feel, and the equity markets feel, that they are extremely well positioned to be competitive. The assistance Emmens has given his peers over the years is less debatable.

Shire has amassed a 560-person sales force to launch its new ADHD drug Vyvanse. The Vyvanse sales force is comprised of members who have experience selling other Shire ADHD products. Shire's CEO Matthew Emmens said he is hopeful the drug will be able to capture 50% market share by early next decade. Shire is expected to sell Vyvanse at $3.40 a day, around the same price as Adderall XR. Vyvanse's selling point is that the drug is less open to abuse because it cannot be metabolized until it reaches the stomach.
