I don't believe that these proposals will be part of the year's budget," said Sen. Diane Savino, D-Staten Island, part of the new Senate majority and newly-appointed chair of the civil service and pension committee. "I don't believe they should be either, for that matter.
"Looking at 2011, I can only imagine what is going to happen to get the pension system funded back to the level it needs to be," said Scott Adair, the county's chief financial officer. "We're probably looking at a double-digit increase.
In his budget address last month, [David Paterson] proposed a new pension tier for newly hired state and local government employees. "Governor Paterson recognizes the important contribution public employees make to life in our state. But their pension benefits, which far exceed those ...

PATERSON -- Ossie Duran's dominant victory over Matt Vanda was rewarding for the people who have watched Duran tirelessly try to change his family's life since he moved to Paterson during the summer of 2008.
Duran displayed a diverse set of skills throughout a 10-round unanimous decision win, the main event of a six-bout card Friday night at Schuetzen Park in North Bergen. He gave Vanda (43-12, 23 KOs), a tough guy with limited skills, fits by using his athleticism and his jab to completely out-class his veteran foe from St. Paul, Minn.

PATERSON Down 0-2 in the count, Paterson Catholic senior Matt Nice was hoping for a pitch he could drive, one with which he could keep his first at-bat alive.
When the slugging first baseman got one, he unloaded, igniting the Cougars' best offensive performance of the season Wednesday during their 11-1 five-inning victory over Glen Rock at Larry Doby Field.

Carrie Blough, the executive director of the Ligonier Valley Chamber of Commerce, is operating under the principle that a little change is a good thing.
She tested that principle at the June 26 Summer Sunday Concert on the Ligonier Diamond, trading the tried-and-true, crowd-pleasing brass band for Me and Mr. Jones, the oldies-but-goodies duo of Carl Jones and Jason Rutter.

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad -- Trinidadian boxing champion Jisselle Salandy, one of the sport's rising young stars, died Sunday from injuries sustained in a car crash on the outskirts of the Caribbean country's capital. She was 21. Salandy died at Port-of-Spain General Hospital shortly after the dawn crash, according to Information Minister Neil Parsanlal. He said Salandy's car ran off a highway and smashed into a concrete column after she had brought a friend to Piarco International Airport.
Known for her quick feet and fast hands, Salandy had easily defended her WBC, WBA and WIBA belts against the Dominican Republic's Yahaira Hernandez on Dec. 26, which pushed Salandy's professional record to 17-0.
