Linda Sodaro is creating massage therapy programs to help veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. A nationally certified massage therapist, the South Charleston woman works with HART, or Healing Appalachia's Returning Troops.
Massage therapist Gayle Hickock helped start Mercy's Hospital's Lymphedema Treatment Center in 1996. She left it 10 years later to explore another groundbreaking field: the use of massage therapy in domestic animals.
Holly Hoffmann's hands have nurtured many living things in the plant world. Now those hands are nurturing humans, as well. Hoffmann worked for years at TerraSalis in Milton. She established the landscape division at that location, working on yards from Huntington to Charleston. Her calm, kind nature was popular with clients at TerraSalis and in her own practice. When the shop closed its doors, Hoffmann decided to pursue a lifelong dream.

Amid litigation, the Maryland State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners has given permission to a certified massage therapist to practice her craft on horses. But the therapist said she will pursue her lawsuit against the agency because the threat of losing her license remains under a state law that prohibits anyone but a veterinarian from performing equine massage. We've still got the cease-and-desist order," H. Mercedes Clemens, the Rockville massage therapist, said Tuesday.
