In 1882 George Angell, founder of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, established a children's club called Bands of Mercy, whose mission was to educate youth about pet care while giving them a platform to initiate positive change for domestic animals.
By 1923, nearly 4 million children were active members of the club, but those numbers dropped in successive years.

LAWRENCE, Mass., July 5 /U.S. Newswire/ -- A national dogfighting expert called for stronger laws to combat dogfighting today, after the arrest of four Lawrence individuals on alleged dogfighting charges.
