Preliminary design concepts for Marysville School show it could expand, possibly adding a second level as it's rebuilt. Portland Public Schools hired architecture firm Fletcher Farr Ayotte to produce preliminary design concepts for rebuilding or replacing the school, which burned last November. Four of those concepts were included in the district's current request for design proposals.

  • Since the May 17 failure of a bond measure that would have provided $548 million for school upgrades, Portland Public Schools has not presented an alternative way to pay for several promised construction projects, and some community members are becoming frustrated. One was Marysville School, a K-8 school in Southeast Portland that was destroyed by a fire in November 2009.

  • We needn't worry that students aren't learning anything in our public schools. Students in the Marysville School District, north of Seattle, have shown several times now that they took in the lesson of last fall's 49-day teacher strike: Don't like the conditions? Just walk out. Some students have been striking or simply skipping classes to protest the short summer forced on them by the fall teachers' strike. The kids will be in school until July 19 to meet the state's mandate of 180 days of school each year. The largest protest appears to have been Monday at Cedarcrest Middle School where about 100 students protested, waving signs and trying to get drivers to honk. A seventh-grader told The Seattle Times, "Us kids are on strike because the teachers went on strike ... and they took awa...

  • Portland Public Schools in May will ask voters to approve a $548 million bond that would help the district improve all 85 of its schools. If the bond were approved, the school district would fully rebuild three high schools - Jefferson, Roosevelt and Cleveland; four K-8 schools - Rigler, Marysville, Faubion and Laurelhurst; and one K-5 school - Markham. Some elements would be preserved, but schools would be mostly rebuilt.

  • Alexis Sanal examined the designs of two schools in Scappoose on Monday, but her mind's eye was focused on a coastal, Middle Eastern city that skirts the Red Sea. Sanal, an architect based in Istanbul, is working on the conceptual design for a school to be built in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. She thought that touring a few American schools might spur some design ideas, and because her mother works for the Oregon School Boards Association, she was able to arrange the Scappoose tours, as well as a meeting with architects at DLR Group's Portland office. Their conversation sparked cultural comparisons and a dialogue about how the design of a school can elevate learning.
