  • Venture capital fund manager Rob Rosenbaum was tapped Tuesday to lead the Maryland Technology Development Corp., a quasi-public agency tasked with nurturing the state's high-tech startups. Rosenbaum's hire ends a national search that stretched on for more than a year and eventually led TEDCO's board back to Baltimore, where it plucked Rosenbaum from Nobska Venture Partners, an early- stage venture fund that invests in technology companies in Israel and the mid-Atlantic.

  • The head of the state's successful program to bring scientific research into the commercial marketplace is stepping down after three years on the job. Renee M. Winsky, who has been president and executive director of the Maryland Technology Development Corp. since 2007 -- and held the job on an interim basis since 2006 -- will resign Aug. 28, according to a release from the organization. John Wasilisin, TEDCO's vice president and chief operating officer, will take over as acting chief.

  • A federally funded loan program designed for early-stage technology firms in Maryland has doubled its funding and expanded from select counties to the entire state. The Working Capital Loan Fund began last September, administered by the Maryland Technology Development Corp., or TEDCO, which matched the original $325,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration.

  • The Maryland Stem Cell Research Commission has recommended funding 36 new projects with the Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund's $10.4 million budget. After the commission reviewed 180 applications, the board of directors of the Maryland Technology Development Corp. approved the recommendations Wednesday. The commission gave preference to proposals that focused on advancing regenerative medicine by selecting research that addressed osteoporosis, traumatic brain injuries, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, schizophrenia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, autism, DNA damage, intestinal tissue generation, clinical drug screenings, and other debilitating and costly medical conditions.

  • The Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development, the Maryland Technology Development Corp., RSM McGladrey Inc. and Saul Ewing LLP have announced the winners of the 11th annual Maryland Incubator Company of the Year Awards. (TEDCO) announced the names of scientists who will receive grants from the Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund's $12.4 million FY 2012 budget. The Maryland Stem Cell Research Commission reviewed 179 applications before recommending 40 to TEDCO's board of directors. Priority was given to proposals that focus on advancing regenerative medicine, targeting such conditions as type 1 diabetes, Parkinson's disease and Lou Gehrig's disease. Funds will also support a collaborative project with scientists at the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine to study stem cell differentiation and bone repair.
