ANNAPOLIS, Md., Oct. 18 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Gov. Ehrlich and the Maryland Department of Budget and Management must cease and desist from spreading false rumors that state employees are being encouraged to participate in a job action over disputed health care benefit changes, two union presidents announced Friday.
Debra Perry, president of AFT-Healthcare MD said, "Our organization never raised the issue of a job action, much less encouraged our members to stay off the job. The first we heard of this was when we were threatened by the Ehrlich administration with disciplinary action for something we knew nothing about," said Perry, whose union represents state nurses and other healthcare workers.

Even though the average state employee could get more than a 4 percent raise in Gov. Martin O'Malley's proposed budget, some of Maryland's public workers touted a study earlier this month showing them as paid below their market value.
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees held a rally March 10 in Annapolis criticizing how the starting pay of state employees is 7 percent below competing employers. The findings were from a study commissioned by the state Department of Budget and Management that compared Maryland salaries with 16 surrounding state, county and city jurisdictions. Data from federal jobs also was used.
