• Landlord Gets 2 1/2 Years in Hate Case

LONG BEACH - An Afghanistan-born physician who struck a pregnant girl in the stomach during a landlord-tenant dispute last year was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in jail Tuesday after a judge ruled she was incapable of rehabilitation. Dr. Mary Zulfacar, a 66-year-old landlord, was convicted March 29 of misdemeanor battery, assault with a deadly weapon and committing a hate crime for her treatment of 17-year-old Jerlean Jackson and her father, Kenneth, both of whom are black.

• Landlord Hate Crime Case Goes to the Jury

LONG BEACH - The fate of a local physician accused of committing a variety of hate crimes in an effort to evict two black tenants from her Orizaba Avenue rental property now rests in the hands of a Long Beach jury. Dr. Mary Zulfacar, a 66-year-old native of Afghanistan and naturalized U.S. citizen, faces several misdemeanor counts and two hate-crime allegations arising from a dispute over a lease agreement with Kenneth Jackson and his 17-year-old daughter, Jerlean.

• Landlord Convicted of Assault On Tenant

LONG BEACH - A jury returned a split decision Thursday in the misdemeanor hate-crime trial of a 66-year-old Long Beach landlord - finding her guilty of assault and battery on a black tenant but not guilty of vandalism, brandishing a weapon and violating a court order. Dr. Mary Zulfacar, a native of Afghanistan who has practiced medicine in the United States for more than 25 years, was taken into custody in Long Beach Superior Court. She is expected to be held without bail until her April 10 sentencing before Judge Tomson Ong.
