FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- A University of Mary Washington soccer player from Westport, Conn., who collapsed during a practice has died. Vice President of Student Affairs Douglas Searcy said that midfielder Preston Hirten, 20, was pronounced dead Tuesday afternoon at Mary Washington Hospital a short time after he collapsed as he went to get water during a break in practice.
Preliminary autopsy results show that Hirten died of an enlarged heart, according to a statement Hirten's family provided to the university.

A local man has died after an altercation with a state trooper along Interstate 95 in Caroline County.
Herbert J. Wheeler Jr., 32, of the 100 block of Flintlock Drive, in Chesterfield, just north of Colonial Heights, was flown to Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg after being shot Thursday, and later succumbed to his injuries early Friday.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - A cancer patient has died less than two days after accepting his Virginia Tech diploma at his hospital bed.
Dennis Hundley, 22, received a bachelor of arts degree with honors on Thursday at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg. A school dean traveled from Blacksburg for a commencement ceremony in the hospital's intensive-care unit. A speech written by Hundley was read by his brother.
