Virtue, we know, is much harder to portray than vice. Iago usually steals the show in Othello as does Roy Cohn in Angels in America. Audiences can also be expected to embrace good-but-flawed characters who don't always do the right thing, like Death of a Salesman's Willy Loman or Long Day's Journey Into Night's Mary Tyrone. Often making the right choice means resisting alluring temptation or missing the chance for ease, comfort or acclaim. Thus the dramatic dangers of goodness are boredom and priggishness. Often playwrights restore spark and empathy with extended courtroom scenes, where virtue can argue its case in its own voice, as with Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird and Juror No. 8 in Twelve Angry Men.

Eugene O'Neill's autobiographical play, Long Day's Journey into Night, is, at its very core, a relentless, driven story about a family who is unraveling. Directed here by Richard Block, the Santa Fe Playhouse's version is ambitious, and if it is not perfect, it is at least very sincere in its attempt to be true to its maker. The Tyrone family is one in which no one ever feels at home. Mary Tyrone, played by Lois Viscoli, is a morphine addict who is living in the middle of her past. Viscoli gives an unremitting performance, showing Mary to be a fragile, despondent, blaming druggie.
