Few people here remember Mary Josephine Ray. She outlived almost everyone who could.
Ray, who lived in Anson and Madison for about 60 years, died Sunday in a nursing home in Westmoreland, N.H. She lived for 114 years, 294 days, making her the oldest person in the U.S. and the second-oldest in the world, according to the Gerontology Research Group.
