Columnist Sheryl McCarthy misunderstands Martha Stewart's remarks about her prison sentence being "shameful" ("For Martha Stewart, humility is never in fashion," July 20). Instead of directly accusing others of persecuting her, as she's done before, Martha exuded ambiguity, probably intentionally. My guess is that she hoped many listeners of her carefully chosen words would think she was admitting some personal shame without, of course, ever doing it.

Faythe Levine and her business partner, Kim Kisiolek, want you to know that arts and crafts are not the exclusive domain of after- school programs and blue-haired sewing circles. Their store, Paper Boat Boutique & Gallery, 2367 S. Howell Ave., which opened in June, showcases handmade crafts from local artists and artists considered to be part of the new wave of arts and crafts. You'll find glass-blown nightlights, handmade jewelry and purses made of recycled materials, but not a doily in sight. This new wave of arts and crafts enthusiasts has co-opted the do-it-yourself ethic of their toilet-paper-cozy-crocheting forebears, and they look at their crafts as a means of empowerment and artistic expression, rather than a homemaker's hobby.
