  • CHICAGO -- GTCR Golder Rauner, LLC, one of the nation's leading private equity firms, announced it has completed the acquisition of EK Success Ltd. (E...

  • Columnist Sheryl McCarthy misunderstands Martha Stewart's remarks about her prison sentence being "shameful" ("For Martha Stewart, humility is never in fashion," July 20). Instead of directly accusing others of persecuting her, as she's done before, Martha exuded ambiguity, probably intentionally. My guess is that she hoped many listeners of her carefully chosen words would think she was admitting some personal shame without, of course, ever doing it.

  • If you plan to give gifts of homemade goodies this year, check out Martha Stewart's line of gift packaging. The Martha Stewart Crafts line, which is sold at Michaels craft stores and online, has a box, bag or wrapper for seemingly any edible gift possibility, from goodie bags to cookie boxes.

  • Martha Stewart has a plan for how everyone can endure the economic crisis: by glittering, embossing and beading. Stewart is doing her part to keep us gilding and quilling with the publication last week of "Martha Stewart's Encyclopedia of Crafts" (Potter Craft, $35), a 416-page volume with 700 photos plus templates, lists of tools and materials guides. This A-to-Z compendium of more than 200 craft projects will be followed next year by volume two, an encyclopedia of sewing-related crafts.

  • In stitches There's a new encyclopedia in town for the sewing enthusiast and it's got Martha Stewart's fingerprints all over it. In fact it's got her name all over it too. "Martha Stewart's Encyclopedia of Sewing and Fabric Crafts" (Potter Craft; $35 hardcover) is the latest offering to come from her omni-empire. Billed as a reference work, the 350-page illustrated tome is chock full of home decor and fashion projects.

  • Fresh-cut trees have a wonderful smell by themselves, but they do wane over time. You can add the scent of the holidays to your tree - and bring a freshness to an artificial one - with homemade ornaments that offer a treat for the nose as well as the eyes. Marcie McGoldrick, editorial director of holiday and crafts at Martha Stewart Living, says balsam sachets, made from small drawstring muslin bags, are easy and fill your home with a sense of the outdoors.

  • Just call Martha Stewart a material girl. Stewart establishes herself as a stitchery expert with "Martha Stewart's Encyclopedia of Sewing and Fabric Crafts." The book provides guidance on a range of issues related to sewing, from setting up a work area to embellishing with embroidery.

  • Fresh-cut trees have a wonderful smell by themselves, but they do wane over time. You can add the scent of the holidays to your Christmas tree - and bring a freshness to an artificial one - with homemade ornaments that offer a treat for the nose as well as the eyes. Marcie McGoldrick, editorial director of holiday and crafts at Martha Stewart Living, says balsam sachets, made from small drawstring muslin bags, are easy and fill your home with a sense of the outdoors. They can be hung on the tree, in closets, or placed in an attractive bowl in the bathroom. (The bags are available at specialty stores and online.)

  • After some (ahem!) unexpected time off, Martha Stewart made a small splash last fall with her highly anticipated "Homekeeping Handbook." But for summer, she's making her comeback loud and clear. One of her new projects is Martha Stewart Crafts, a line of 650- plus pieces with all the essentials for creating everything from scrapbooks to party puppets. The pretty photo albums, papers, ribbons, stickers, markers, pens, scissors and tape (17 choices) are $1.99 to $79.99 and available exclusively at Michaels and marthastewart crafts.com.

  • Faythe Levine and her business partner, Kim Kisiolek, want you to know that arts and crafts are not the exclusive domain of after- school programs and blue-haired sewing circles. Their store, Paper Boat Boutique & Gallery, 2367 S. Howell Ave., which opened in June, showcases handmade crafts from local artists and artists considered to be part of the new wave of arts and crafts. You'll find glass-blown nightlights, handmade jewelry and purses made of recycled materials, but not a doily in sight. This new wave of arts and crafts enthusiasts has co-opted the do-it-yourself ethic of their toilet-paper-cozy-crocheting forebears, and they look at their crafts as a means of empowerment and artistic expression, rather than a homemaker's hobby. Levine sat down with Journal Sentinel reporter ...

...In and out. Q. Is Martha Stewart considered part of the old arts and crafts...
