Considering where the company has been and how far it has come back, there couldn't be a more appropriately named piece for the Martha Graham Dance Company to be world premiering here Thursday than "Ardent Song (Redux).
The piece premiered in London in 1954 and was then lost, an irony not lost on Artistic Director Janet Eilber, a former Martha Graham dancer herself who took over the helm of the venerable dance company in 2005 when it was at its ebb, shut down for two years in a morass of financial and legal problems.

On Tuesday night, the Fine Arts Center kicked off its 75th anniversary celebration with a powerhouse appearance by the Martha Graham Dance Company.
The house was full. So were the first-come folding chairs at the back of the SaGaJi Theatre. More important than bodies, though, was the palpable excitement coursing through hall. This was an event with a capital E and every person in that room likely knew at least one person who wanted to be there but were too slow reserving tickets.

NDTCs 2010 repertoire also includes 'Asi Somos' by the Cuban-born Arsenio-Andrade Calderón (a strong, athletic dance work featuring an all- male cast): 'Vignettes of Life', a modernesque suite of solos and duets by Clive Thompson (an alumnus of the Alvin Alley American Dance Theatre Company and the Martha Graham Contemporary Dance Company); and Claderon's 'Reflection'.
Both performances will feature two pieces choreographed by [Rex Nettleford]: 'Rumina , which features Marlon Simms and Keita Marie Chamberlain in the roles of the King and the Queen, and Tintinnabulum', a social-commentary piece on sons and mothers, peer group pressure and youth violence created by Rex Nettleford.
As in past seasons, the dancers are accompanied by the NDTC Singers, under the direction of musical director ...

The late dance pioneer Martha Graham has been compared to Igor Stravinsky, Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein as being one of the great creative minds of the 20th century, said Janet Eilber, artistic director for the Martha Graham Center, which houses the Martha Graham Dance Company in New York City.
That's one of the reasons why the company has created a multimedia work called "Prelude & Revolt," which it will perform at Kingsbury Hall this coming weekend.

When the Martha Graham Dance Company performs at Popejoy Hall Center for the Arts in Albuquerque on Friday, March 13, Janet Eilber will either be onstage as narrator, in the wings, or backstage. Wherever she is, and whether she's performing herself or quietly observing, she'll be watching critically, carefully, and happily. As artistic director of the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance and a longtime member of the company, she could hardly do anything else.
Even young dancers who really don't know what she did, who may just know her as a name, are affected by her," Eilber said in a phone interview from Los Angeles. "The show we're doing on this tour is our response to that -- showing, theatrically, what she did.
