Actor, Iraq war veteran and "Dancing with the Stars" contestant J.R. Martinez was named the Grand Marshal of the 123rd Tournament of Roses Parade on Tuesday. Martinez, 28, of Los Angeles was wounded by a land mine in Karbala, Iraq in 2003 while serving with U.S. Army and suffered severe burns to more than 40 percent of his body. He spent more than two years in the hospital and had 33 surgeries before he went on to star in the daytime drama "All My Children" for three years.

AUGUSTA - A legislative committee postponed a decision Monday on a bill that would legalize fireworks in Maine, opting instead to send the matter to a special subcommittee for more study. The vote to table the bill and send it to a study group came after State Fire Marshal John Dean told members of the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee that, given his years of experience, he could not support legalizing fireworks in Maine.

ELKINS - A federal marshal was shot and killed while trying to serve a warrant in Elkins Wednesday morning. Two other marshals also were shot, and the gunman was killed by law enforcement. The U.S. Marshals Service identified the marshal who was killed as Derek Hotsinpiller, 24, of Bridgeport. He had been with the marshals for a little more than a year, serving in the Clarksburg office since his graduation from the U.S. Marshals Academy.

SIERRA MADRE - Gayle Bluemel, retiring principal of Sierra Madre School, was voted Wednesday as Grand of the Sierra Madre Fourth of July Parade, said Matthew Bosse, chair of the Fourth of July Committee. I am so excited," Bluemel said Thursday. "This Sierra Madre parade is such a tradition in this community. For me to be selected by the committee is just a wonderful honor."Bluemel has served in the Pasadena Unified School District for 38 years and at Sierra Madre School for twenty years, she said.Meanwhile, John Shear, the 90-year-old Santa Anita Park paddock supervisor who saved a girl from a runaway horse in March, will "be selected to be honored as Sierra Madre's Hometown Hero," Bosse said.
