The second reason for the energetic and passionate resistance of the African American community against marriage equality is aie result of the misinformation about the impact marriage equality legislation would have on a church's religious freedom. Many African American clergy incorrectly believed that if marriage equality passed, churches would be required to perform same sex weddings if requested by a gay or lesbian couple. Once again there is irony in this argument because separation of church and stale is the very same argument used by those advocating for same sex marriage, indicating that marriage is a civil institution by virtue of the State of California issuing the marriage license.
Issues such as unemployment and underemployment, lack of affordable healthcare, the high percent...

The fact that he would bring up marriage so earty, and the fact that you didn't laugh in his face, disqualifies you both from obtaining a marriage license. Last week's decision by the California Supreme Court upholding Proposition 8 was expected but. in the wake of so many recent victories, still saddening, and I'm getting mail from lots of unhappy people. Fundamental civil rights should not be subject to a popular vote, of course, and the California Supremes had an opportunity to reaffirm that ideal.

This isn't what locals expect to see as they drive to lunch in downtown Monterey. A twentysomething jumps from the curb shouting, "Hey Wonderbread man! Honk for gay marriage!" Behind her, dozens of protesters hold up colorful slogans like "God didn't create me to hate me" and "Love thy neighbor.
Only the second state to grant marriage rights to gays, California does not require residency for a marriage license as does the first, Massachusetts. With New York recently announcing that it will accept gay marriages from outside jurisdictions, county clerks expect out-of-staters will travel to California to wed. "We've gotten a lot of calls from out of state," says Angie Munoz, senior legal process clerk. "If we get busy, we've prepared. We've trained practically all our staff to type up lic...

WEST HOLLYWOOD - As Mr. Sulu on "Star Trek," George Takei's fantasy mission on the starship Enterprise was "to boldly go where no man has gone before.

In an earlier brief filed in the case, in June, the DOJ drew a firestorm of criticism from the LGBT community when it asserted that DOMA addresses a legitimate need for the federal government to adopt "a cautious policy of federal neutrality towards a new form of marriage." The brief asked the courts to uphold DOMA in order to protect the federal government's "scarce resources" and its ability "to respond to new social phenomena one step at a time, and to adjust national policy...

I NOMINATE actress Gwyneth Paltrow for the good sense award. In December, a week after announcing that she was pregnant with a child fathered by Coldplay musician Chris Martin, the couple quietly secured a marriage license and exchanged wedding vows in a short, secret ceremony in California.
Surely they had the money for something a bit more elaborate, but the party wasn't the point. By joining together when they did, the Paltrow-Martins have given their baby, due this summer, a gift more valuable than any Oscar: The security that he or she will be born into a family committed to each other, legally and otherwise.
