The price for a marriage license for some couples in West Virginia is about to go up.
Starting June 8, couples who do not undergo four hours of premarital counseling will pay $56 - or an extra $20 - for a marriage license. The Legislature enacted the change in March.

West Virginians would pay more to get married if they didn't seek pre-marital counseling under a bill up for vote next week in the House of Delegates.
The proposal - no pun intended - encourages would-be spouses to attend pre-marital education courses by raising the price of a state marriage license from $35 to $55. Those who take the course would pay the lower rate.

Couples applying to Allegheny County for a marriage license can now cut their wait time at the records office by applying online, officials said last week.
Marriage applications can now be filled out online at alleghenycounty.us/wo/plan.aspx before both applicants come with photo IDs to the Marriage License Bureau on the first floor of the City-County Building to complete the application process. Filling out the form online can cut out two-thirds the time spent at the license office, according to officials from the Allegheny County Department of Court Records.

IOWA CITY - A Florida man said Friday he's angry a rural Iowa court official duped him and his partner into paying for an invalid marriage license, saying the case illustrates the difficulty facing gay couples who cannot get married in their own states.
Joab Penney, 28, of Williston, Fla., said he recently learned the license obtained in February was bogus after he contacted an attorney to get a divorce.

Democrats offer dozens of amendments on labor bill DES MOINES -- Democrats in the House Labor Committee have filed more than 50 amendments to a bill they say would gut public workers' ability to negotiate contracts. Rep. Bruce Hunter, a top Democrat on the panel, said Thursday they're prepared to debate the bill into the weekend. Republicans argue the bill is beneficial to taxpayers. The bill allows state workers to reject representation from unions that negotiate with the state on wages, benefits and other issues. The bill also limits what unions can negotiate on, including the terms and source of insurance, restrictions on outsourcing and what factors can be considered for layoffs.
