• Increase in Driver's License Renewals Could Cause Delays

Mainers who need to renew their drivers licenses between now and the end of 2013 may encounter more than the usual congestion at their local Bureau of Motor Vehicles offices. The bureau expects a sharp increase in the number of license renewal applications beginning next month and lasting through the end of 2013. In an effort to streamline the renewal process, the BMV reminds Mainers to bring with them two essential documents. One document must verify residency in the state of Maine and may include a valid drivers license, a tax bill, a marriage certificate or weapons permit. The second document must prove the applicants legal presence in the United States and may include a birth certificate, passport, certification of naturalization or resident alien card.

INDIANAPOLIS - A Republican state lawmaker is facing tough questions about her proposal to quadruple fees on marriage licenses and certificates unless couples complete marriage preparation classes. Under the bill, couples who complete premarital classes would pay the standard $18 fee for a marriage license and certificate. But couples who don't take a course would pay $72. Bill sponsor Rep. Cindy Noe, R-Indianapolis, said marriage preparation classes would strengthen Indiana families and help prevent family fragmentation.
