MORGANTOWN - There would be no repeat for West Virginia, but the Big East Conference tournament has its three-peat. The Mountaineers' defense of their 2010 Big East championship dead-ended with 67-61 loss to Marquette on Wednesday night before a sold-out Madison Square Garden crowd of 19,375.

NEW YORK - West Virginia is one of only two teams to win its first Big East Tournament game the previous three years. The other is Marquette, which extended its streak to four straight years Tuesday and hopes to prevent the Mountaineers from doing the same tonight. The 11th-seeded Golden Eagles defeated No. 14 seed Providence 87- 66 in the final game of the first day of the tournament at Madison Square Garden. Marquette led 17-0 despite two quick timeouts by the Friars, who didn't score for the first 5:18.

Iowa Class 1A state semifinal Bellevue Marquette (16-6) vs. Ar- We-Va (23-2) At: Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines Tipoff: 8:30 p.m. Live updates: THonline.com DES MOINES - Paige Daugherty was recently voted MVP of the Big East Conference and was the only Bellevue Marquette girls basketball player named to the all-conference first team.
Game analysis: Marquette finished 11th in the Big East and some argued ? rather loudly ? that the Golden Eagles didn't belong in the field of 68. Yeah, right. Hello Sweet 16. Marquette pounced on a critical Syracuse turnover and made enough plays down the stretch to advance to Newark for the Sweet 16 after a 66-62 victory over the Orange in a third-round matchup in the NCAA Tournament. How Syracuse lost: The turnovers, all 18 of 'em, were damaging as Marquette scored 23 points off Orange miscues. Marquette took away Rick Jackson's offense in the low post and Buzz Williams move to put 6-7 Jimmy Butler on point guard Scoop Jardine, making Jardine's passing angles more difficult, is one of the reasons why Williams is so respected by his peers.
A regular-season title wasn't enough for Bellevue Marquette. The Mohawks wanted a Big East Conference tournament title, too. Iowa Class 1A No. 8-ranked Marquette beat Calamus-Wheatland (21- 12, 18-21, 15-10) in the quarterfinals before knocking off crosstown- rival Bellevue (25-13, 25-14) in the semifinals at the league tournament Tuesday night in Goose Lake, Iowa.
MILWAUKEE - Jae Crowder and Marquette played 40 minutes of near- perfect basketball Saturday morning. West Virginia took the first four minutes and last 90 seconds off. That's all it took for the Mountaineers to fall into an 0-2 hole in the Big East for the first time since 2002.
MILWAUKEE - Assistant coach Cara Consuegra saw the concerned looks on the faces of Marquette's players after coach Terri Mitchell was hit in the head and knocked out of the game after sustaining a concussion. We just talked about that she was going to be fine," Consuegra said. "I had no idea if she was going to be fine, but I told them that and just told them to focus on the game because she wants a win.
