  • A continuing, often bitter, argument among "China hands" is over where the introduction of elements of market economy and attendant technology would take communism "with Chinese characteristics. Just as two decades of remarkable Chinese economic successes have been exaggerated, Pollyannaish speculation has argued that economic development would bring greater freedom. Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, now claiming Chinese expertise, maintains that outside pressure cannot modify Beijing's repression. But he holds out the hope - as do many of his persuasion - that economic progress will eventually bring a free society.

  • There is a famous description of the life of Deng Xiaoping: "San Qi San Luo," meaning "three times down and three times rise." Deng was persecuted by Mao because their ideas often clashed. Yet, Deng would emerge again and again because of his skills were needed to save China. Deng believed the criteria for success was determined by common sense and flexibility rather than rigid political ideology. Deng is credited with pioneering "socialism with Chinese characteristics," a "socialist market economy," with economic reforms that opened up China to the world. He dramatized this philosophy by insisting, "No matter if it is a white cat or a black cat, as long as it can catch mice, it is a good cat. Deng set a vision for China, post-Mao, that was pragmatic and flexible. His goal was to drag ...

  • Of all the challenges facing chief executives, getting China right is one of the most important. China says it is evolving into a socialist market economy with Chinese characteristics. It reflects a long and complex transition from a planned economy to more of a market economy. Politics, used properly, can be a powerful tool for getting deals done and keeping joint ventures on track. Obviously, foreigners cannot discern all the politics swirling around and within Chinese organizations, and indeed most foreign executives do business in China without appreciating it. What happens, though, is that the politically naive never understand why their deal is delayed or aborted -- or how negotiations can be facilitated, problems averted and issues resolved.

  • Many in the West view China's history as beginning with Mao's proclaiming the formation of the People's Republic of China oh Oct. 1, 1949, while standing in Tiananmen Square where his portrait now hangs. Communism is just a blip on the screen of China's 5,000 year history. Clearly, the Chinese took a tortuous course that inflicted great harm on the Chinese people during Mao's reign, including the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, where as many as 70 million Chinese perished. Simon Winchester's new book, "The Man Who Loved China," is an easy read about Joseph Needham, the brilliant, eccentric Cambridge scientist who unlocked the many mysteries of China. Winchester's book is like an archeological dig as he unearths Needham's work that determined the Chinese "were responsible...

  • One of the enduring characteristics of the forex market is that it is embedded within the global economy. With approximately $2 trillion per day being exchanged through the interbank system, when current trends shift, the resulting levels of resistance and support must be respected. Underlying every support and resistance level are expectations and fears about the performance of the underlying economies. A good place to begin to understand what moves prices beyond the intraday swings is to inventory forex fears. Gaining an understanding of what central banks "fear" can provide valuable knowledge to shape forex trading strategies. These fears include: 1. fear of inflation, 2. fear of deflation, 3. fear of recession and an economic slow down, 4. fear of oil price surges, and 5. fear of Ch...

  • One of the most important phenomena that came from the infamous Duke Lacrosse Case was the emergence of an influential blogosphere that mitigated some of the effects of the mainstream news media. Because this coming together of large numbers of individuals seemed to originate from nowhere, one way to examine it, as Richard Posner has suggested, is through the lens of what F.A. Hayek called the "spontaneous order." While Hayek was referring to the social effects of a market economy, which comes about not by central planning, but by individual plans, nonetheless this blogosphere had many of the same characteristics of social cooperation by people of many different backgrounds. Further, this article will consider Cass Sunstein's criticism of the analogy to Hayek's spontaneous order.

  • This paper describes how Ireland drastically improved its economic position through its adoption of what came to be referred to as the Celtic Tiger strategy. Because of the surprisingly striking similarities between Ireland and Guam and the finding that the Celtic Tiger strategy represents nothing but "sensible policies "for enhancing economic growth, we believe that Guam can employ those elements of the Celtic Tiger strategy that worked, and modify those elements that did not. By doing so, Guam can transform itself into the Pacific Tiger.
