- Ferry Search Policy May Be Enforced
Travelers used to an idyllic ferry ride on North Carolina waterways may soon be subjected to searches of their persons or vehicles under new security rules that address maritime terrorism threats. With passage of the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002, the North Carolina Ferry Division was required to have a security plan for its facilities and vessels in place by July 1. The Coast Guard has approved the plan, but ferry officials said that it is not yet clear how it will be implemented.

Various U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) regulations require the transmission of advance cargo information to CBP through a CBP-approved electronic data interchange (EDI) system. CBP recently completed the testing of the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) for the transmission of advance ocean and rail cargo information.
