Maritime academies have been in the news lately as governments and shipping companies decide how best to deal with piracy. But these schools, including Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, are about much more than training ship captains.
While the economic downturn may keep MMA from maintaining its record of placing 90 percent of its graduates within one year, the usual parade of industry recruiters has been visiting the Castine campus, if only to pick good prospects for the time when hiring once more begins. They include boat builders and representatives of the flourishing offshore drilling industry, which is going ever deeper in the quest of oil and natural gas and increasingly requires skilled supply boats and people to staff them.

LONG BEACH - Port and maritime officials launched a new era of "green" shipping operations Tuesday, as the first cargo-container ship plugged into clean dockside electrical power.
The new technology allows berthed ships to shut off polluting engines - now left running idle to generate power aboard the ships - and instead reduce emissions by switching to a dockside power source that's designed to cut back Southland environmental problems.

The maritime trade community is boiling over the state's refusal to execute a shipping tax credit that became law more than two years ago. Exasperated industry leaders say it's only the latest example of longstanding myopia in state government when it comes to world trade and the Mississippi River.
The state, when they look at the port and international trade, they don't consider it economic development," said Port of New Orleans board member Greg Rusovich, referring to administrations past and present.

Seven years after spearheading sweeping environmental initiatives at the Port of Long Beach, local lawyer and professor Mario Cordero is headed to Washington to serve on a maritime commission at the request of President Barack Obama.
In a lengthy interview Monday, Cordero laid out his plans for the next few years as a member of the Federal Maritime Commission, a quasi-independent federal agency tasked with overseeing federal shipping rules.
