Oxygen levels fell significantly in deep-sea areas of the Gulf of Mexico contaminated by the BP oil spill, researchers said Tuesday, but not enough to create biological "dead zones" that cannot harbor marine life.
Moreover, the water's oxygen levels seem to have stabilized.

Heavy nets used by industrial bottom trawlers ravage crucial habitat, ripping up sea grasses and coral forests that are up to 2,000 years old. Water quality grows ever-poorer, fouled by a witch's brew of pollutants running off the land or dumped at sea. Nutrients, mostly fertilizers and sewage, have created 146 "dead zones" in the world's oceans, with oxygen levels so low that marine life cannot survive.
That's the bad news. There's good news, too. Last January, the revised US Magnuson-Stevens Act adopted an ecosystem approach to ocean protection, mandating an end to overfishing and bycatch of protected species, and protection for deep-sea corals. Other nations, including Britain, Australia and New Zealand are also changing fishing practices.
We're all participating in the oceans' demis...

Redondo Beach. The City Council tonight is set to consider its position on the Marine Life Protection Act Initiative, a statewide process that would designate coastal no-fishing zones, with the intent of protecting ocean habitat.
The city, which could bear much of the economic impact of proposed closures in popular recreational and commercial fishing areas off the Palos Verdes Peninsula, has previously asked state officials for careful consideration during the monthslong initiative process.

WASHINGTON -- Scientists have found 200 "dead zones" in the world's oceans -- places where pollution threatens fish, other marine life and the people who depend on them.
The United Nations report Thursday showed a 34 percent jump in the number of such zones from just two years ago.

The Coast Guard proposes to establish temporary special local regulations and safety zones for marine events on the navigable waters within the Captain of the Port (COTP) Sector Long Island Sound zone for regattas, fireworks displays and swim events. This action is necessary to provide for the safety of life on navigable waters during the events. Entering into, transiting through, remaining, anchoring or mooring within these regulated areas would be prohibited unless authorized by the COTP Sector Long Island Sound.
