The formal ceremony in December last year, right before the holidays, was a 20-Kleenex affair by all accounts. All the employees of Crebassa's and Novato Toyota who had worked on the Camry were there as well as the owner of Novato Toyota, Herb Lakritz. As San Anselmo and other Marin communities dig out of the muck it's natural to flash back on our last significant bout of shovel 'n' shout. Where were you in January '82? I was washing dishes at the old Mill Valley Coffee Shop at Miller and Locust when water started seeping under the front door and we realized that a soggy situation was about to go seriously south. One of the fry cooks jammed down to the lumber yard and brought back some plywood to nail up along the building's facade, but the heroic and resourceful gesture was all for naught. Within a few hours we abandoned ship (and our cars) and a couple of coworkers and I walked home to San Anselmo and Fairfax, in water that was often waist deep and moving fast enough to knock a grown man flat.

The Marin County Civil Grand Jury, the citizens' group charged with overseeing local government, has recently come out with a pair of reports. The first, issued June 22, is a review of the county Treasurer's Office. While the report states that the Treasurer's Office is a well functioning branch, it finds fault with the agency's new accounting system, MERIT (Marin Enterprise Resource Integration Technology). Specifically, the grand jury finds that the system does not protect against the cashing of fraudulent checks and has a discrepancy with the old procedures to reconcile checks. In order to correct these problems, and to protect against fraud, the grand jury advises that MERIT consultants and county technology experts revise the MERIT system.
