Miss Marie Antoinette Smith, of 1930 Rome St., Petersburg, passed away on Oct. 17, 2009, at Southside Regional Hospital.
Marie was born Dec. 18, 1955, to the late Lillie Irene Smith of Petersburg. Marie was baptized at an early age at the Mount Olivet Baptist Church, Petersburg, under the pastorate of the Rev. C.L. Johnson. She graduated from Petersburg High School Class of 1974. After graduation, she moved to Baltimore, where she lived for 25 years. Upon returning to her home town, Marie began working at the Southside Virginia Training Center until her declining health.

Ms. Smith was an avid bowler in several leagues. She bowled competitively and later non-competitively with the AARP league. She was also a den mother to her grandson's Cub Scout troop. She did volunteer work at Hanna House and Meals on Wheels.
When she turned 70, she went to Marygrove College and learned how to play the piano, fulfilling a lifelong dream.

VIRGINIA BEACH - , 67, of the 700 block of Arvin Road, was called home to be with her Savior on Saturday, June 10, 2006, after a valiant struggle with cancer. Born in La Crosse, Va., she retired from Princess Anne High School after 32 years as an English teacher.
She was a member of Elizabeth River Baptist Church and teacher of the Friends Sunday school class. She was also a member of the church choir and the Joyful Sound Ladies Ensemble, as well as leader of the Prayer Ministry. She enjoyed her monthly outing with "The P.A. Girls." Her greatest joy in retirement was time spent with her beloved grandchildren. She loved, and was gifted in, nurturing roses and flowers of all kinds.

Carrie Marie Russell Smith, of Buffalo, a retired Erie County Health Department employee, died Sunday at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Austell, Ga. She was 82.
Born in Atlanta, she was a longtime member of Mount Zion Church of God Holiness, 32 Oakgrove Ave., where she served a secretary of the church's usher board, was a choir member and a former president of the pastor's aid committee.

HOLMESVILLE -- Larry and Marie (Wilson) Smith, 109 N. Wood St., will celebrate their 50th anniversary on Sunday. They were married in 1959 at Millersburg Christian Church by the Rev. Robert Hunter.
They are the parents of Roy of Wooster, Brenda Smith of Wooster, and Eric (Vickie) of Mansfield. They have four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
