  • This paper analyzes discourse on Straight-Acting.com. I argue that straight acting gay men model their version of masculinity on working class aesthetics. Furthermore, this masculinity is dependent upon a high level of anti-femininity and homophobia. The members of this community condemn any gender performances that they label "in your face" gayness. While their rejection of the link between effeminacy and homosexuality has the potential to undermine dominant gender ideology, ultimately, they reinscribe hegemonic masculinity through their marginalization of women and other gay men.

  • The intellectuals, members of The Association of the Manifesto of Liberties, self-identified as women and men, carriers of the values of laïcité and connected together by their unique histories and in different ways to Islam, and registered two overriding concerns: a general marginalization of Muslims within European societies, and the divisive splits within the Muslim communities that were being exacerbated by the so-called Cartoon Affair.

  • JUSTICIA FOR Migrant Workers (J4MW), a migrant advocacy group, has filed a complaint with the Office of Independent Police Review Director (OIPRD) regarding what it describes as "racial profiling and other questionable practices used by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to obtain DNA from approximately 100 Caribbean migrant workers near Vienna, Ontario, during a sexual assault investigation that took place in October and November of 2013. DNA samples were taken from Indo and AfroCaribbean men whose ages ranged from 21 to 61, whose heights ranged from 5'0" to 6'5", whose body sizes ranged between 1301bs to 310lbs. Based on the available information it seems that the OPP engaged in racial profiling of migrant workers in rural Ontario, using tactics which would immediately be condemned...

  • Recently the media has been busy proclaiming "the end of men." The general theme: As women have become empowered, men have become lame. The evidence is compelling: 60 percent of today's college students are women, while more than half the workforce is now female. And although the income of males remains higher on average, the gap is rapidly closing.

  • Don't ask, don't tell" ended this week, nearly a generation after the policy was adopted. Some Americans look back on the 1993 agreement between then-President Bill Clinton and Congress as a well-meaning if misguided compromise. Others view it as a cynical and craven dodge to avoid acknowledging that the previous outright ban on gays in the military was an injustice. But the majority of Americans today recognize the policy as absurd, self-righteous and impossible to defend. It created a hostile and dishonest environment in which unknown thousands of men and women willing to die for their country were forced to participate in their own discrimination and marginalization. Nearly 14,000 others were discharged, either because they told the truth or because they were forced out b...

  • I See Men as Trees, Walking, works by Lucas Reiner, 333 Montezuma Annex, 333 Montezuma Ave.; 982-8889; through Sept. 19 I See Men as Trees, Walking is an ambiguous title for a show of paintings, but it seems like an honest one. Who can doubt West Coast artist Lucas Reiner's experience walking the streets of Los Angeles and recording, in paint, the arboreal denizens he encounters? Trees have personalities and presence. Like people, they are subject to the vicissitudes of city life: pollution, overcrowding, marginalization. In Los Angeles, as in other cities, trees get battered and abused -- cut to accommodate power lines, stunted without room to grow.

  • Aboriginal people cannot see themselves in antiracism contexts, and Aboriginal activism against settler domination takes place without people of color as allies. Though antiracist theorists may ignore the contemporary Indigenous presence, Canada certainly does not. Police surveillance is a reality that all racialized people face, and yet Native communities are at risk of direct military intervention in ways that no other racialized community in Canada faces. Here, Lawrence and Dua elaborate on decolonization and antiracism in Canada.

  • This study looks at factors affecting the decision of early retirement for Egyptian government sector employees. The empirical analysis is based on 2005 nationally representative sample of government sector workers. Among the findings of this study are: women are more likely to retire earlier than men; good health status is associated with longer stay on the job; the level of education is not a determining factor for women, but it is for men; men plan to work after their early retirement; the presence of the working wife has a positive effect on her husband to retire early, yet a working husband discourages his wife from retiring early. Policy implications discussed timing of the announcement of the plans; the potential outcome of excessive payouts, as well as the need for the governmen...
