[Ryan Clark], otherwise known as Stack to his friends, had set his sights high after graduation-with hopes of earning a Ph. D in psychology with a focus in neuroscience. It is ironic given that his dreams were cut short by a mentally ill loner by the name of Seung-Hui Cho, whose deadly shooting spree claimed 32 lives, including that of Clark who stumbled across the shooter in his own efforts to assist one of his residents-19-year-old Emily Hilscher-the massacre's first victim. He lost his life rushing to the aid of another student, which did not come as a huge surprise to those who knew him. Clark, a member of Virginia Tech's Marching Virginians band for five years, spent his summers as a counselor at a camp for disabled kids.

One of the 32 lives claimed in [Seung-Hui Cho]'s deadly shooting spree belonged to [Ryan Clark], who stumbled across the shooter in his own efforts to assist one of his residents, 19-year-old Emily Hilscher, the massacre's first victim. That Clark lost his life rushing to the aid of another student did not come as a huge surprise to those who knew him - a member of Virginia Tech's Marching Virginians band for five years, Clark spent his summers as a counselor at a camp for disabled kids.
In New York, which received a B+ from the Brady Campaign, black men made up nearly the same percentage of the state's murder victims 46.5 percent - in 2004 even though a substantially lower percentage - just under 58 percent - of all the state's homicides involved firearms.

In a sea of white, maroon and orange, the boy dressed all in blue was hard to miss.
But that boy, 15-year-old Zach Bird of Glade Spring in Washington County, didn't mind. For one day, he was part of Virginia Tech's marching band, the Marching Virginians. Better still, he was playing "the hokeypokey" at Lane Stadium at the Hokies' first home game of the season.

THE INK WAS BARELY DRY on the secession proclamation. Just two weeks had gone by, yet Virginians were marching off to war with a whoop and a holler, ready to take on those dastardly Yankees for threatening to invade their soil.
Take in the scene in downtown Suffolk on Saturday and you might get an idea of what it was like.

I am writing in support of those marching this week to save Blair Mountain. Taking the same route as thousands of miners did in 1921, hundreds of West Virginians along with others from around the nation are marching to oppose the decimation of Blair Mountain and its history by mountaintop removal. They are marching in support of miners, of unions, of sustainable economies and of our state.
Last Sunday, I was driving my family home to Huntington after a lovely weekend at Pipestem State Park. As we drove into Kanawha County, we passed Paint and Cabin Creeks, where I let my daughter know that 99 years ago courageous miners and their families joined together to fight for their freedoms.

One hundred Marching Virginians and hundreds more Virginians-at- heart packed Lakeside High School's gymnasium Saturday to remember Ryan "Stack" Clark and a smile that inspired them.
At the ceremony, held at the school where he graduated in 2002, many people shed tears, some shared hugs and most wore Virginia Tech maroon and orange.
