Jeanna Freeman of Collierville had never heard of the term "digital detox" before her trip to the mountains of western North Carolina in the fall.
She visited Earthshine Mountain Lodge in Lake Toxaway, a vacation resort touted as one of the country's premier destinations for digital-detox back-to-basics family vacations. There, guests are gently encouraged to set aside their Blackberrys, iPads, iPhones and other electronic devices and enjoy technology-free stays, immersed in nature, outdoor activities and old-fashioned fun in order to unplug and reconnect with family and friends. Rooms do not include TVs. Instead, guests are invited to relax and converse on the porch rocking chairs, or tackle the zip-line canopy tour and high ropes obstacle course.

During the past decade, innovation has morphed before people's very eyes -- breaking loose from the R&D department extending beyond products and services into internal business processes, and spilling outside the four walls of individual companies. Organizations in which innovation represents a daily priority tend to embrace an expansive definition of the term; they also tend to execute innovation through intensive collaboration, a heavy dose of outside thinking and a clear yet simple underlying mission. During the Great Depression, Kellogg doubled its advertising budget while its competitor, Post, trimmed nearly all expenses, New Yorker business columnist James Surowiecki points out. Dell rose to prominence not by producing innovative PCs, but by innovating how the components of ea...

Of course, kids today have all sorts of amusements we didn't when we were reading Richie Rich and Batman comic books. So we pore over the Watchmen and read "Persepolis" while young Madison updates MySpace via Twitter and Tyler plays GuitarHero or whatever kids do. Even by 1996, [Michael Chabon McSweeney] found that reading comics in the daily paper was, "for those of us who still bother, half melancholy habit and half sentimental adherence to duty, a daily running up of a discredited flag in a forsaken outpost of an empire that has collapsed." (A completely tangential rant: Why don't comic strips die with their creators? I agree Charles Schultz was some kind of genius at the time, but unless strips move aside no new blood ever gets any ink and we're stuck with Beetle Bailey's 1940's gen...
