KUCHING, Sarawak, Malaysia, March 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- 2010 saw a substantial increase in economic output across key sectors and dramatic gains in standards of living for Sarawakians, adding weight to the state Government's economic and social policies. In 2006, the Government embarked on a comprehensive reform agenda designed to deliver a peaceful, progressive and prosperous Sarawak. The targets set out in 2006 have been met with a staunch determination to achieve results for the people of Sarawak, and 2011 will see further improvements. In 2010 Sarawak saw impressive economic growth, despite the continued threat of the global financial crisis, with GDP expanding by 5.4% and public investment up by 18.9%. The economy is also expected to grow at a similar rate this year. This growth ...
With the 9 o -year anniversary of the founding of the famed German school of art and craft and design - the school that calls to mind sharp corners and flat roofs, glass and steel and exposed materials, simple furniture and bold painting - have come the exhibitions, retrospectives, and commemorations. Alma's emotional state seemed to shift with every letter she sent her husband - some included the loveliest, most devotional sentences and others spilled over with anger and disloyalty.\n On April n, 1933, several months after Hitler was sworn in as Germany's chancellor (a ceremony which had effectively ended the German parliamentary democracy) police raided the Bauhaus to search for "illegal propaganda materials.
[Andy Rappaport] can afford to dream big. Like many entrepreneurs in the '80s and '90s, he made his fortune developing technology start-ups, a talent he now plies at his venture firm in Silicon Valley. An avid capitalist, Rappaport is also an ardent progressive and world-class philanthropist. His New Politics Institute (www.ndnpac.org/npi/) is a think tank devoted to charting a new course for progressive politics in the 21st century. Putting his money where his mouth is, Rappaport was the third largest contributor to Democratic candidates in the 2004 elections (that's got to hurt). It would be a mistake, however, to limit the scope of Rappaport's insight to the political dimension of media. His most fundamental point, which was the bottom-line "bullet" in his presentation, is that "we m...
Now, being pretty hip in this regard, Santa Feans have realized the prevalence of green-washing. We are not shocked to notice that the latest grocer with "farmers market" in its name has quite little to do with farming or that many of its products must be shipped a conspicuous distance in order to reach our local shelves. It's no big deal... it's the way of commerce. We might go to one store for low prices, another for high-quality organics and a third for the best local fare. This is why sustainability is a muddy word. One must always discern what it means in the context it is used, just like "green" or "eco" or "environmentally friendly. Unfortunately, despite its granthose title (a manifesto.'), the book is a simple monograph on the work of one architecture and planning firm, and a ...
Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) leader, Bruce Golding (second left), with manifesto in hand, and his wife Lorna Golding (right), are surrounded by Audley Shaw (left), JLP spokesman on Finance, and Dorothy Lightbourne, JLP spokesperson on Legal Affairs. The occasion was last Monday's launch of the parry's manifesto, at the Jamaica Conference Centre, downtown Kingston. Speaking at the launch at the Jamaica Conference Centre, downtown Kingston, Mr. Golding told the gathering that the JLP would draft legislation to establish Jamaica as an offshore financial centre and to redevelop Port Royal as a cruise shipping destination. Commenting on the country's libel and slander laws, Mr. Golding said the JLP would amend this piece of legislation as it served as a 'firewall' to protect 'scoundrels' who t...
As one of the "few obstructionists" Mayor Byron Brown referred to as responsible for the decision by Bass Pro not to come to Buffalo, I would like to proudly proclaim "The Obstructionist Manifesto. I believe that the Hippocratic Oath, "First do no harm," while it applies to medicine, also applies to city planning, particularly when those plans impact our waterfront. As an obstructionist, I believe that all plans that cause harm must be stopped.
