  • Middle managers, the leadership of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has a warning for you: Go with the agency's cultural reforms, or go away. The attitude survey, conducted in February by Behavioral Science Technology Inc found that NASA's organizational culture does not reflect the values it prizes most. "Safety is something to which NASA personnel are strongly committed in concept, but NASA has not yet created a culture that is fully supportive of safety," the consulting firm stated in its March 15 report on the results. Although the assessment revealed a "very solid foundation" of employees who are passionate about NASA's mission and want to contribute to President Bush's vision for space exploration, company Chief Executive C. Patrick Smith says, "their achie...

  • We contend that the international strategy adopted by and the international experience of top executives in parent firms, as well as the embeddedness of foreign subsidiaries in host countries, moderate the impact of institutional distance between home and host countries on the divergence of isomorphic pressures experienced by foreign subsidiary managers. We further suggest that diverging isomorphic pressures are more likely to spur foreign subsidiary managers to deinstitutionalize organizational routines from parent firms when these managers possess knowledge-based power, the subsidiary's performance is declining, or social controls are lacking from the parent firm. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

The results indicate that sales managers with a higher predisposition to self-monitoring (modify facet) were the higher performers. Significant differences by gender are reported. Sales management experience was a significant predictor of performance in the male subset, but not with the female subset. The sensitivity facet of self-monitoring was significantly influenced by sales management experience in the female sample.

  • The inherent conflict between creditors and shareholders' has long occupied courts and commentators interested in corporate governance. The nature of managers' fiduciary duties depends on the financial situation of their company at the time managers take the action in question. Thus, if at the time managers' actions occur the corporation is solvent, managers' fiduciary duties are to shareholders; if, however, at the time of the managers' action the corporation is in the vicinity of insolvency, managers' duties are to the community of interest, and if the corporation is insolvent at the time, managers owe their duties to creditors. The governance of the modern corporation generally relies on some combination of contractual and fiduciary regulation. As a matter of positive law, the govern...

  • This research studies the strategies used by managers to cope with negative word of mouth. We investigated seven different coping strategies across French and North American managers. The results revealed that, for coping with negative word-of-mouth, managers evaluate as the most efficacious strategy that of increasing trust in the negatively discussed product, service, or company. The results also suggest that doing nothing is perceived as less effective than increasing trust or denying negative word of mouth. Finally, we find a high degree of similarity in the perceptions of the utility of negative word-of-mouth redress strategies across the two managerial cultures.
