William R. (Randy) Mizer, has been elected as a member to the Board of Directors of the Earl B. and Loraine H. Miller Foundation. Mizer joined the Douglas Aircraft Company in 1962 and over the next 40 years advanced in engineering, supplier management, manufacturing, quality, corporate planning and program management with McDonnell Douglas and The Boeing Company.
We are adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain The Boeing Company Model 777 airplanes. This AD was prompted by a new revision to the airworthiness limitations of the maintenance planning document. This AD requires revising the maintenance program to update inspection requirements to detect fatigue cracking of principal structural elements (PSEs). We are issuing this AD to ensure that fatigue cracking of various PSEs is detected and corrected; such fatigue cracking could adversely affect the structural integrity of these airplanes.

This article provides technologists with the business-case methods and tools to calculate the value of projects involving risky new technology or markets but that potentially offer higher returns in the long run. A typical business case using NPV analysis is presented for a new product, an air freighter. NPV is first extended to multi-scenario analysis and then to a "whatif" model using Monte Carlo simulation. Finally, a realoption value for the air freighter is calculated.
