We've brainstormed some ways you can fit fun into your hectic life; whether it's time, money or motivation you're lacking, you're bound to get an idea or two. You'd love to get out more often, but your friends never want to go anywhere. So join a group and find some more pals. Don't know where to start? Check out a church activities calendar. Find (or start) a book club. Find out whether your aima mater has an alumni group in the area. Seek out social groups in your city. • Elizabeth Jackson is different from other 17-year-olds. Most kids are like, 'Ooh, a computer! I can go on Facebook,' " the Ligonier Valley junior said. "They don't think, 'What a cool piece of technology!'

  • For the next 12 months, I'll be inviting you to my table, sharing stories, anecdotes, lessons from the kitchen and, of course, recipes from my new cookbook, "Molto Batali" (ecco, 2011). And it's about family meals. It's tough to ask families to come together for supper everyday. With homework, soccer, baseball, football and basketball -- not to mention two or three jobs -- life gets in the way. But it's important to make time. Start with one day a week. Chose your family's favorite dish, say, meatloaf, and make it every Tuesday. Trust me, everyone will naturally start to build their schedules around the meal. It's a subtle shift in mentality.

  • Since the Obama Administration released its Blueprint for Regulatory Reform last June, the Texas Banking Association (TBA) has redoubled their effort in Washington. At the direction, and with the full support, of their Board of Directors, they have focused more than ever on relationship-building at the federal level. However, after spending a week last month in DC, the author will say that their new plan of attack has definitely been successful. TBA hosted 61 bankers and directors in Washington, DC, for the 2010 ABA Government Relations Summit, March 16-March 18. Bankers explained that Texas banks continue to thrive; and, despite what is reported in the media day in and day out, their banks continue to serve their communities to the best of their abilities. Furthermore, because of a nat...

  • Does the Illinois General Assembly have no shame? Is it capable of being embarrassed? In a state in which two governors in a row have been convicted of corruption, perhaps it is too much to ask lawmakers to enact reforms to stop misdeeds and misconduct of any type - not just criminal activity involving governors or ex-governors.

  • TODAY is Election Day, and if you're a registered voter, it's an opportunity - and a duty - to help decide who represents you. Candidates are vying for seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, on city councils and on school boards. At stake are issues ranging from city tax rates to health care to transportation to education policy.

  • Years ago, when I worked for an anti-hunger lobbying group in Washington, D.C., we commissioned a series of focus groups to study Americans' attitudes toward hunger and food. In one part of the study, participants were asked about their gut responses, so to speak, to food and eating. The results were interesting, if typically schizophrenic. The participants looked at food as fuel, a mechanical process to keep our bodies running. Another response was more revealing: Food comes from Mom. Although most now looked at food as little more than something to check off on the to-do list three times a day, people also strongly associated eating with family, with home and with their mothers. There was still hope. The main enemy of the home-cooked meal is, of course, time -- specifically the lack o...

  • So there I was Thursday, struggling to succinctly capture how the Clippers are worthy rivals to the Lakers after acquiring All-Star point guard Chris Paul and pairing him with young forward Blake Griffin. How do you sum up three decades of infamy being wiped away with one trade to acquire one player?

  • Mila Téllez [mailto:Mila%20Téllez] For the Latino community, there is an important election on Feb. 2nd. As you choose the candidates who will represe...
