NEW ORLEANS - A couple decades ago, few in college football would have dreamed of placing Virginia Tech in the same elite class as Michigan. As the two teams collide in Tuesday night's Sugar Bowl, however, the team more associated with sustained success in recent years won't be wearing maize and blue.
KETTERING -- Brady Hoke didn't exactly have his career path mapped out while growing up in Kettering. He may be a Michigan Man through and through, but coaching the Maize and Blue was never his ambition while starring in football at Fairmont East and then enrolling at Ball State. Mike Downing developed his definition of college hockey from an early age by watching the University of Michigan and legendary coach Red Berenson. So, when the opportunity presented itself to play for the Wolverines, the slick defenseman from Canton, Mich., couldn't say yes fast enough. A high school junior-to-be, Downing will play two seasons for the Dubuque Fighting Saints before joining the maize and blue in time for the inaugural season of Big Ten Conference hockey.
