JERUSALEM - Nobel peace laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire asked Israel's Supreme Court Sunday to allow her to enter the country, five days after the outspoken critic of Israel was detained at the airport on her way to meet Jewish and Palestinian peace activists.
Maguire's legal challenge sets the stage for a new showdown with Israel. The 66-year-old activist, who won the peace prize in 1976 for her efforts to end sectarian violence in Northern Ireland, has been barred from entering Israel because she took part in attempts to breach Israel's sea blockade of the Gaza Strip.

I have seen much change in Northern Ireland in the 32 years since I won the Nobel Peace Prize, yet some things remain the same. I still see wars raging around the world, and children suffering from the effects of conflicts started by adults.
Recently, I joined 30 other Nobel Peace Prize laureates as part of a Save the Children global initiative to call for urgent action to implement quality education in all conflict-affected countries. We hope this joint appeal will encourage the world to listen to our important message that education can promote peace.

JERUSALEM -- Jewish activists who sought to breach Israel's Gaza blockade this week said Wednesday that navy commandos treated them harshly when they intercepted their boat.
The claims of rough treatment present another headache for Israel, which has had to fend off several recent attempts by pro- Palestinian activists to break the Jewish state's three-year naval embargo of the seaside strip.

SAIR, West Bank - Israeli police killed a West Bank construction worker as he tried to sneak into Jerusalem on Sunday.
The victim, Izzedine Kawazbeh, a 35-year-old father of five, was shot after scaling Israel's towering separation barrier by rope and dashing across a wide stretch of road heavily patrolled by Israeli police. Israel started building the barrier in 2002 during a wave of Palestinian suicide bombings that killed hundreds of Israelis. The last one was in February 2008.
