Next month, a new crop of medical residents will report to general surgery at Maine Medical Center. Nothing out of the ordinary about that - this is the time of year bright-eyed residents start rotations - except that all of the young doctors are women.
They make up the first all-female class of general surgery residents at Maine's largest hospital. Not only did they edge out dozens of fellow medical students for five vaunted spots, they did so in a specialty long dominated by men.

AUGUSTA -- Helen Maxine Allen, 94, a lifelong resident of Litchfield, passed away Friday evening, May 13, at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta.
She was born on May 13, 1917, in Litchfield, the daughter of Raymond and Thelma (Buker) Tozier. She attended Litchfield schools, graduating from Litchfield Academy in 1934 as valedictorian of her class.

OAKLAND, Maine - , 93, died Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, at the Maine General Medical Center in Waterville. He was born in Lovell, Maine, on March 23, 1916, the son of Elmer and Ethel (Webster) Fox.
Webster began work at an early age, taking over his father's milk route. He worked for Bath Iron Works during World War II. He drove trucks for St. Johnsbury Trucking until he lost his leg. In 1947 he received auto repair training in Hallowell and went to work for Central Maine Motors in Waterville. He later opened his own business on Alpine Street in Oakland and was self employed for many years.

WATERVILLE, Maine -- A woman who was transported to the hospital for minor injuries after being struck by a car wound up spending the night behind bars after she and her boyfriend tried to steal several items, police said.
Faith O'Connor, 37, of Waterville was taken Monday night to Maine General Medical Center after she was hit by a car on Main Street, according to Waterville Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey.

AUGUSTA -- , 61, a resident of Augusta died Monday, April 4, at Maine General Medical Center following a long illness.
He was born in Lewiston, Sept. 4, 1949, the son of Elwood N. and Fleeta A. (Smith) Carver. David was the youngest of nine children. He was educated in Auburn schools and was a graduate of Edward Little High School. He then continued his education at the Augusta School of Commerce majoring in accounting.

AUGUSTA -- Jeanne (Jane) Cote Charpentier, 89, of Lewiston and more recently at the Woodlands in Hallowell, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 26, with her loving daughter, Linda at her side following a brief illness at Maine General Medical Center.
She was born in Edmundston, New Brunswick, April 22, 1921, the daughter of the late Alexie and Delina (Bouchard) Cote.

She was born Nov. 23, 1945, in Farmington the daughter of Erlan L. "Oscar" and Anita (Bisbee) Hunt. She was a 1964 graduate of Livermore Falls High School.

AUGUSTA - , 61, of Whitefield, passed away Friday, May 15, at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta after complications involved with his heroic battle against pancreatic cancer.
He was born in Lewiston on Nov. 12, 1947, the son of Harry W. Dixon Jr. and Gertrude (Golder) Dixon. He graduated from Lewiston High School in 1966, then graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1970 with a bachelor of science in civil engineering.

AUGUSTA -- Willie G. Deshaies, 62, a resident of Main St., Jay, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Sept. 28, at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta, following a lengthy illness.
He was born May 13, 1948, in Livermore Falls, the son of Willie F. and Emma B. (Lacroix) Deshaies. He attended school in Jay.
