BRIDGTON -- The annual meeting of the Bridgton Hospital Guild was held at the Campfire Grille Restaurant on Oct. 20.
The guild president, Sandra Weygandt, presided over the gathering of members and guests. Guests included Bridgton Hospital president, R. David Frum; Philip Libby, chairman of the board of directors; John Ludwig, vice president of administration; Pamela Smith, director of development and community relations; and Marie Paul, administration secretary. Special guest speaker for the event was commissioner Sawin Millett, a member of the governor's cabinet and commissioner of the State of Maine Department of Administrative and Financial Services.

According to state figures, agencies have spent $984 million in stimulus funds through June 30.

FARMINGTON - University of Maine at Farmington recently honored three alumni and friends of the university at the annual president's luncheon for their contributions to UMF and the community. Presentations were made by Theodora J. Kalikow, UMF president, to Janet Mills, state attorney general; alumni Ryan Low, Maine Department of Administrative and Financial Services commissioner; and Bradley Reed.
Mills, former legislator for the towns of Farmington and Industry, was presented with the Friend of UMF Award. A supporter of public higher education in Maine, Mills has worked with state leaders about issues of importance to UMF.

Rebecca Wyke (BDN op-ed, July 22-23) claims the state is run like a business. This commissioner of the Department of Administrative and Financial Services is wrong. Maine is not being run like a business; furthermore, the state should not be run like a business. Before Democrats became the party of business, they knew that.
Wyke thinks businesses have "strategic investments," "business plans" and "operating capital" ... "minimize overhead" and "create a little savings." But she overlooks the most important thing. Businesses exist to make a profit. All the rest is a means to an end. The state, unlike businesses, does not make a profit.
