James L. Witherell of Lewiston takes a fresh look at Bean in his new biography, "L.L. Bean: The Man and His Company," published by Tilbury House Publishers in Gardiner. The book comes up just before the 100th anniversary of the company, which was founded in 1912.

COLUMBUS -- L.L. Bean, the Freeport, Maine-based company known for backpacks, chinos, boots and camping gear, has a $210,770 disagreement with the state over the Commercial Activity Tax.
That's how much Tax Commissioner Richard Levin this month ruled that L.L. Bean owes in taxes and penalties for failure to pay the CAT on assessments from July 1, 2005 to March 31, 2008.
