Just days after top U.S. Postal Service officials said they were moving ahead to close mail sorting facilities nationwide, the agency halted the plans Tuesday amid pressure from members of Congress.
The Postal Service, in a three paragraph statement, said it was delaying closure of sorting plants and post offices across the country until May because of a request by "multiple U.S. Senators.

Small offices that may not qualify for bulk postal rates can still achieve significant savings by revising mailing procedures. Metered and barcoded mail is eligible for lower rates, and postcards can be used to take advantage of a $0.20 rate. Pieces being sent to the same address should be consolidated under one cover, and return receipts should not be requested unless necessary. Businesses distributing marketing materials in oversized envelopes, called flats, should be aware that letter-sized mailings will qualify for lower rates.

The U.S. Postal Service's decision to move its tri-parish sorting operations from Mandeville to New Orleans is under fire from the Slidell City Council, where opponents say it will further slow mail service.
The Council passed a resolution April 10 opposing the Postal Service sorting decision and requiring the federal government to examine the plan to move sorting operations from 1 St. Ann Drive in Mandeville to the processing and distribution center on Loyola Avenue in New Orleans.

A nonprofit that helps disabled people find jobs has taken over mail-sorting operations for all state agencies at a West Side office.
JSI Presort Mail Services, located at 723 Watts St., presorts by ZIP code about 1.9 million pieces of state agencies' mail, said Mark Kessler, JSI director of services and business development. Presorting saves the state 8 cents in postage for each letter.

Fire investigators estimate a mail sorting business on the West Side sustained about $100,000 worth of damage in a blaze.
Firefighters responded to a fire alarm at JSI Presort Mailing Service on Watts Street about 7:40 p.m. Monday, Charleston Fire Capt. Carl Beaver said.
