  • Leading Lady; Maid of strong stuff; All Good in the Hood; Dek: Cate Blanchett not afraid to spring into the action F or centuries, girls throughout the English-speaking world have fantasized that they were Maid Marian getting rescued from damsel- in-distresshood by that dashing hero Robin Hood.

  • Maid Marian asked Robin Hood, "How come we only steal from rich?" Robin Hood said to Friar Tuck, "See, why we don't have more women in upper management? Actually, Maid Marian was the only one of the merry band who understood that all theft is wrong. So before we buy into the Robin Hood philosophy advocated by Sen. Tom Harkin and other venal politicians, remember this:

  • Unfortunately, he's working with a handicap: The material isn't great. The pilot is set in 1994, and the writers try (and fail) to get easy laughs from topical events like O.J. Simpson's Bronco chase and Herve Villechaize's suicide. [Rob Corddry] makes you laugh in spite of the uneven writing, but he shouldn't have to work so hard. Robin finds Maid Marian (Lucy Griffiths) as pretty as ever, but not as passive as we remember her. She's a feisty heroine who's as handy with sharp objects as Robin. And speaking of sharp objects, the archery and swordplay are simply breathtaking. The first episode's climax - with Robin saving his friends from the hangman's noose - thrilled me to the core. When Robin asks an assembled throng, "Will you tolerate this injustice?" I shouted "No!" and jumped onto...

  • Archbishop Spalding High School, 8080 New Cut Road, Severn, will offer the classic tale of Robin Hood slightly twisted when Spalding Theatre presents "The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood" by Mary Lynn Dobson this weekend. Senior George Inglis plays the title role of Robin Hood to his main squeeze, senior Angeleaza Anderson's Maid Marian while senior Shelby McDaniel fills in the blanks as The Town's Gal.

  • The death of classical music in the 20th century has become an almost tiresome cliche, but maybe now is the time to ask if these reports of serious music's demise have been greatly exaggerated. Perhaps we have just been looking for it in the wrong place. Perhaps it merely went into hiding in a place where you would least expect it: the Hollywood soundstage. Let's go back to those thrilling days of yesteryear and consider composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Academy Award-winning soundtrack for Warner Bros.' 1938 swashbuckling costume epic "The Adventures of Robin Hood" as a case in point. Mr. Korngold's score for the film, which starred a youthful Errol Flynn as Robin and a winsome Olivia de Havilland as Maid Marian, has long been hailed as the gold standard for movie music.

  • Also killed is a nobleman named Robert Loxley. The poor chap's dying wish is that [Robin Longstride] return the family sword to his father. You'll never guess who his widow turns out to be. As fate - or rather, Brian Helgeland's hodgepodge of a script - would have it, Marian (Cate Blanchett) hasn't been a maid for 10 years and lives with her fatherin-law (Max von Sydow) on his 5000-acre estate. I'd like to be able to say that the climactic battle sequence is so spectacular it redeems the film, but, to be honest, it's literally too little, too late. [Ridley Scott]'s done it all before, and better - the first 15 minutes of Gladiator, in which [Russell Crowe]'s Maximus makes Alpo out of the barbarian tribes of Germania, are more exhilarating and imaginatively choreographed than this entire...
