Apply a quarter cup of Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) to each mature rose bush to boost both vigor and flowering capacity. It is inexpensive and can be found at drug stores, where it is commonly sold as a laxative or for soaking feet. A cup or so spread around citrus, avocado and other fruit trees boosts their performance, too. This little bit once a year is just right, but more is counterproductive, so don't get carried away. Prune hibiscus and other evergreen shrubbery as needed, especially if it was damaged by winds or frost over the winter. Hibiscus grows quickly, so it's OK to cut overgrown plants back quite a bit. There were no drugs for the treatment of hypertension until 1955. African-Americans used folklore medicine that consisted of a mixture of Epsom Salts and grapefruit juice. The throbbing in the head due to the elevated pressure was relieved. Little did they know that the Epsom Salts was pure magnesium sulfate. It has been subsequently shown that magnesium is an element that relaxes the walls of arteries, thus reducing the pressure. Where this practice developed, no one really knows, but it worked. The first drug that could be taken orally was hydrochlorothiazide (a water pill). Unfortunately, this pill caused a loss of potassium. Feed roses within the next few weeks for abundant fall flowering. Use a balanced plant food formula that has all three main ingredients - nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium - indicated in a number formula such as 8-12-4.
