  • DETROIT | Magglio Ordonez and Miguel Cabrera hit consecutive homers Thursday in a five-run seventh inning to lift Detroit, a day after a blown call cost Armando Galarraga a perfect game. Brad Thomas (2-0) retired two in the sixth inning for the win. Hector Abriz (0-1) gave up a run on two hits in an inning.

  • VIERA, Fla. | Justin Verlander pitched six scoreless innings, leading Detroit past Washington 6-1 in a game in which Magglio Ordonez was scratched from the Tigers' lineup because of a sore left hamstring. Verlander (Old Dominion) allowed six hits, struck out seven and walked one.

  • DETROIT - In his first 20 innings as a Yankee, Freddy Garcia had yielded only three extra-base hits. But in a span of three batters in Wednesday night's third inning, Miguel Cabrera ripped an RBI double and Magglio Ordonez - who hadn't hit a home run all season - sent a two-run shot over the left field fence.

  • IT WILL ALL COME TOGETHER FOR... The White Sox. As expected, Chicago's offense has been dynamic. It should be even better after slugging RF Magglio Ordonez (calf, knee) returns from the D.L. RHP Esteban Loaiza, LHP Mark Buerhle and newly acquired RHP Freddy Garcia give the Sox an imposing rotation to go with their hard-hitting lineup. RHPs Shingo Takatsu and Jon Adkins and LHP Damaso Marte have stabilized the bullpen, which has been a weakness the past couple of seasons.

  • Yovani Gallardo kept putting up zeros, setting off no-hitter alerts all over. So when he glanced at the Busch Stadium scoreboard, the Milwaukee pitcher clearly saw what was happening. In Toronto, that is. Because thats where Justin Verlander was doing even better, working on a perfect game. Obviously, you see during the game different scores around MLB and, for some reason, the pitchers always notice that, Gallardo said. Minutes after Gallardo gave up his first hit against St. Louis, Verlander walked a Toronto batter. Thats all the Detroit ace yielded, though, while throwing the majors second no-hitter of the week. By the time Verlander and his 100 mph heat finished what Francisco Liriano and his spinners started four days earlier, the stamp on this season was unmistakable. This is the ...

  • ANAHEIM - Angels pitcher Jered Weaver was suspended for six games and fined an undisclosed amount for throwing a pitch over the head of the Tigers' Alex Avila on Sunday in Detroit, but if he had to do it all over again, he wouldn't change a thing. Weaver was upset after a home run by Carlos Guillen, after which Guillen posed, flipped the bat and looked at Weaver while trotting to first base. Earlier in the game, Weaver was upset that Magglio Ordonez appeared to pose at the plate after a home run as well, though Ordonez explained he was looking to see if his ball went fair or foul.
