In July 2009, Joe Scarpaci Jr., Virginia Military Institute professor and a Virginia Tech professor emeritus, rode his bike 325 miles from his home in Blacksburg, through the revolving doors of Magee-Womens Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, raising money for resources for cancer patients.
In June, he repeated the ride, which is in memory of his mother, Josie, who died of breast cancer in 1998.

Hackensack University Medical Center has named Ketul J. Patel as its new chief strategy and operations officer and one of four executive vice presidents.
Patel, 39, has held executive positions at hospitals in Pittsburgh, Chicago and San Diego over the last decade. Most recently, he has been vice president of operations at Magee-Womens Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center since January 2008.

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center plans to create 500 jobs during the next year, officials said yesterday after announcing strong results for the recently ended fiscal year.
Although the bulk of the jobs will be at UPMC Presbyterian and Shadyside -- the network's major hospitals -- nurses and physician assistants also are needed at UPMC Passavant, Magee-Womens Hospital and UPMC McKeesport, where admissions increased after the closing of neighboring UPMC Braddock, officials said.
