The Navy has awarded Norfolk-based Maersk Line Ltd. a multiyear contract potentially worth $126 million for the operation and maintenance of five container and roll-on/roll-off ships in support of the Military Sealift Command's Marine Corps Prepositioning Program.
The "Bobo-class" vessels - 2nd Lt. John P. Bobo, Sgt. William R. Button, 1st Lt. Baldomero Lopez, 1st Lt. Jack Lummus and Pfc. Dewayne T. Williams - will be crewed by civilian mariners and deployed worldwide to preposition equipment and supplies at sea.

In a verdict that defied common sense - and the judge's instructions - jurors smacked shipping company Maersk Line Ltd. with a $25 million judgment last year. The plaintiff is a 50-year-old Mathews County seaman whom the company fired shortly after a July 2008 incident. He'd sought $50 million.

Maersk wins Navy contracts up to $66M
Maersk Line Ltd. has won Navy contracts for the operation and maintenance of two ships in the Military Sealift Command's Maritime Prepositioning Force, the Roy M. Wheat and Fred W. Stockham. The contracts would be worth $66 million to the Norfolk-based Maersk if all option years through September 2015 are exercised, not including reimbursable expenses. The ship operating company will provide personnel and mariners, operational and technical support ashore and afloat, as well as all the equipment, tools, provisions and supplies necessary to operate these vessels worldwide, in support of the Marine Corps.
