Europe's largest oil company, Royal Dutch Shell PLC, and Madison- based Virent Energy Systems Inc. are teaming up to find ways to produce gasoline directly from plant sugars, a move that could eventually reduce costs associated with biofuels.
Virent is using catalysts to convert plant sugars into hydrocarbon molecules similar to those produced at petroleum refineries. The resulting "biogasoline" has a higher energy content than ethanol and could deliver better fuel efficiency, researchers say.

MADISON (AP) - Wisconsin should get more energy from renewable sources, the federal government should review oil company mergers and the country needs to set up refined oil reserves, according to a report state consumer protection officials released Friday.
The report stems from a hearing Gov. Jim Doyle called in Milwaukee last month to address rising energy prices. Doyle, a Democrat, subpoenaed executives from ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, Shell, BP America, and Chevron to explain gas prices spikes in the wake of hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the volatility of the natural gas market.
