KATMANDU, Nepal - Tens of thousands of former communist rebels and their supporters rallied in the capital Saturday demanding Nepal's coalition government be disbanded and replaced by a Maoist- led government. Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal refused to resign and instead called on the Maoists to resolve the Himalayan country's political crisis through dialogue.
Lawmakers elected a communist party leader as Nepal's new prime minister on Saturday in a move aimed at ending weeks of political turmoil. Madhav Kumar Nepal , 56, of the Communist Party of Nepal was elected unopposed, parliament speaker Subash Nemwang announced. The previous prime minister, former Maoist rebel chief Pushpa Kamal Dahal , resigned May 4 following a dispute with Nepal's president.
